Description

Built over wetlands near Sigiriya, Vil Uyana is where you’ll spend your first 3 nights, in the heart of Sri Lanka’s cultural triangle. Get close to nature – you might even glimpse the wide eyes of a Loris along one of the trails. Next, you’ll spend 2 nights at Kandy House set in jungle gardens on the edge of the city. Take to Kandy’s streets on foot, exploring the Temple of the Tooth and the Gem Museum, ending your day with a cocktail at the Butterfly Bar. No trip through Sri Lanka is complete without a visit to the tea plantations, so we suggest 3 nights at Ceylon Tea Trails. Following a magnificent train journey from Kandy, you can soak up the British Colonial atmosphere as you sip the finest teas or take to the river for some white-water rafting. Finally, to the coast for 5 nights at Villa Bentota, a luxurious retreat by the sea for fine dining and impressive sunsets.

When to travel

From May to August the Yala monsoon brings rain to the island’s southwestern half. The southwest has the highest rainfall – up to 4000mm a year. There is also an inter-monsoonal period in October and November when rain can occur in many parts of the island.

Colombo and the low-lying coastal regions have an average temperature of 27°C. The sea stays at around 27°C all year.

Climatically speaking, the driest (and best) seasons in Sri Lanka are from December to March for the west and south coasts.
