Description
Begin your China adventure in the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai where a night at the Peninsula will be sure to relieve you of any jet lag. Have a relaxing drink at Cloud Nine of the 87th floor of the highest hotel in the world.
Fly to Lijiang in Yunnan Province, where a very different China can be experienced. At an altitude of 2400 metres the scenery here is stunning with the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain as the backdrop, snow capped all year round.
Visit the Old Town, Dayan a UNESCO World Heritage site with it’s maze of cobbled streets, meandering streams and hundreds of roof tops all lit up at night. Your private guide and driver will escort you to Yu Hu village, a very traditional Naxi village where time has stood still and afterwards take an exciting 4 wheel drive to Wenhai Lake over mountains to a remote village where scenery and birdlife is stunning. Stay at the Banyan Tree Lijiang, in our opinion one of the most spectacular hotels in China. Each villa has a monstrous garden with either a private Jacuzzi or pool, mostly with a view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Drive north to Shigu where the Yangtze River, still in it’s infancy here takes a dramatic turn to flow to Tiger Leaping Gorge. There is also a quirky museum here of the Red Army a reminder of China’s communist past. Head on to Tiger Leaping Gorge where the water flows fast through cliffs of 4000 metres. As you continue the drive you will notice a change in architecture as you cross into Greater Tibet.
Stay at the Banyan Tree Ringha where each lodge built over two floors imitates the style of a traditional Tibetan farmhouse. Each villa has stunning views over the rural area dotted with stupas in the horizon. Enjoy the evening in the cosy bar and restaurant with a traditional hotpot – not to be missed!
The following day start exploring this area and visit the breathtaking Sumstenling Monastery where you will find monks carrying out their daily life and locals coming to worship. Head to the old town which is similar to Lijiang’s Dayan but on a much smaller and intimate scale. For those wanting to do some serious trekking there are incredible escorted treks available where you are sure to not see another soul for hours!
Head back to the modern world for a final night in Shanghai and maybe some time for a spot of shopping or dining out before heading home.
