Description

Accommodation in the Mekong Delta is simple but comfortable and this is perfectly complemented by the luxurious hotels in Saigon and Cambodia.

This itinerary begins in Saigon, where you will stay in the luxurious Park Hyatt Saigon, in the perfect location in the heart of town. Wander out to experience the hustle and bustle of the city and take an excursion into the countryside to visit the Cu Chi Tunnels, an incredible underground tunnel network constructed by Vietnamese resistance fighters.

From Saigon, you will be driven into the Mekong Delta, firstly to Can Tho and then on to Chau Doc, spending a night in each at the Victoria Hotels on the banks of the river. Take to the water to sample Mekong Delta life by visiting some of the numerous floating markets, which sell an abundance of fish and fresh fruit among other things. The area can also be explored by bicycle and you will wind through small, rural villages to get an insight into local family life.

Then travel up the Mekong by speedboat into Cambodia, arriving into Phnom Penh by lunchtime. In Cambodia you will be able to explore bustling Phnom Penh and a visit to the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng, a former high school that the Khmer Rouge turned into a centre for interrogation and torture is also a must, to understand the recent history of the Khmer Rouge regime.

Finally fly up to Siem Reap and for many, this will be a highlight of the journey, as you will visit the ancient temple complex of Angkor Wat, set in the depths of the Cambodian forest. Your private guide will accompany you to the major temples such as the eerie faces of Bayon or overgrown Ta Prohm as well as helping you discover some of the lesser-known temples in this vast complex. Or take to the skies to see Angkor Wat from a hot air balloon or even by helicopter – a once in a lifetime experience. After a busy day sightseeing come back to Hôtel De La Paix, a stunning contemporary hotel with close ties to the local community. The location is also ideal in the heart of Siem Reap, so you can wander out to explore the vibrant restaurant and market scene.

Choose to fly home from here or maybe extend at a beach resort, just a short flight from Siem Reap.
