Manhattan Skyline to Colorado Snowline is recommended for

Description

Begin by flying to New York to enjoy three nights at Robert de Niro’s superb Greenwich Hotel, with its great position in TriBeCa among some of the city’s best restaurants, boutique stores and galleries. It is a family-friendly hotel that offers a haven of peace amid the bustling streets of Manhattan, but we would suggest getting out and about and exploring.

If you haven’t been to New York before, there are the obvious attractions of the Empire State, Statue of Liberty and Central Park as well as great food, the Broadway theatres, museums and shopping. Even if you’ve been a bundle of times before, we keep up to date with the latest restaurant openings, coolest bookstores and best small museums, and can offer a range of less-known but equally wonderful experiences that will help you get the most out of your time in New York.

Next it’s time for some old-fashioned Western adventure in the Colorado Rockies. We have suggested five nights at the amazing Dunton Hot Springs, a wonderfully restored silver mining town high in the mountains near Telluride. The twelve exclusive hand-hewn log cabins are located in a majestic natural setting, and create the most wonderful atmosphere, perfect for connecting with nature and re-connecting with your family. Included is a full-day guided hike or snowshoe trip for the family, a scavenger hunt, couples massages for Mum and Dad, two half-day activities for the children, and unlimited use of snow shoeing equipment, mountain bikes, cross-country skis and ice-skates. Screening Room in Dance Hall with access to over 800 DVDs, access to fantastic hiking trails, West Fork Gym, Hot Springs

There are also spectacular riding and mountain biking trails in the High Rockies to follow, go heli-skiing in search of virgin powder pistes, enjoy world-class fly fishing, go kayaking and river rafting, explore the desert and its incredible Navajo archaeological sites, and even travel through the Valley of the Gods to the lodge’s own exclusive vineyard.

Or you can indulge more cerebral pursuits such as learning photography, perhaps a painting class, and enjoying the incredible spa or soaking for hours in the natural hot springs. Dine outlaw-style in The Saloon, where you can swap tall tales and enjoy exquisite locally sourced food, before heading back to your Western cabin to watch the brilliant stars before retiring.

When to travel

Jackson Hole has an extreme continental climate with very cold winters and warm summers. Activities are very seasonal. Spring, from late April to June, is marked by mild days and cold nights, with some rain and occasional snow. It is in spring that newborn elk, moose, bison and bears start appearing. Summers offer warm days and cool nights and a profusion of brightly coloured wildflowers. In autumn, the aspen and cottonwood run gold and red. The days are sunny, with cold nights. Rain eventually gives way to snow. Winter brings with it enough deep snow to keep a skier happy well into April. It also brings the elk to the valley.

Summer or winter, rain or shine, there's always great stuff going on in New York, so when you're planning a trip, there's no real "best" or "worst" time to go.
