Description

An overnight flight will take you to Nairobi from where you will head south into northern Tanzania. Your first stop is at Grumeti River Camp, set on the banks of the Grumeti River and the western Serengeti. The camp itself is quirkily designed with many unique design features and the game viewing here is superb at any time of year. You'll be expertly guided on twice-daily game drives and well fed and watered in camp.

You then take a short flight to the other side of the Serengeti to the private Klein's concession, located just outside the park proper. Klein’s Camp is set in its own private concession with stunning views over the plain below. The ten individual cottages are set along an escarpment and are solidly built in the style of rondavels and have en-suite bathrooms. The game viewing is superb and Klein’s offers both day and night game drives with excellent guides and vehicles.

Finally, head to the coast and the remote island of Pemba. Fundu Lagoon has just 18 rooms and suites dotted along the beach and up the hillside overlooking the sea, all linked by rustic wooden walkways. Each has its own en-suite bathroom and private deck, which makes a perfect spot to sit and sip a sundowner while watching the sunset. There is superb diving nearby at Misali Island as well as snorkelling. The lodge runs a twice-daily boat shuttle to the island and guests are welcome to take a picnic and just chill on the beach or explore the island. They also have kayaks for exploring the mangroves around the lodge and a traditional sailing dhow, which is often taken out in the evening for a little sunset cruise. There's also a pool above the resort with it's own bar and a couple of rooms for massage treatments and also a jetty bar, which is popular in the evenings for a pre- or post-dinner drink with other guests. Often, tempting seafood canapés will be made from something one of the guests has caught during the day.

Fly home overnight via Nairobi.

When to travel

Tanzania is a large country, with a varied climate. Generally, the long rains run from March to May - the temperature is warm and the humidity is high. June to October is the long dry season, and the short rains are in November and December, much lighter than the long rains. January and February are again dry (the short dry season) so this is another good time to visit. The wildebeest migration happens most of year in Tanzania's Serengeti, and is linked to the rainfall.
