Cairo, where your journey begins, truly is a city of many faces. It has busy spice bazaars and mosques that fill the mediaeval city, glass and steel towers that dot the Nile, elegant colonial architecture and then the ancient Pyramids at Giza. In Cairo we design a day specifically around you and the family, using a private guide and tailoring the day so that it is ideal for all the family.
Children love to ride camels around the Pyramids before heading to the Papyrus Institute where they can write their name out in Hieroglyphs. Continue to the Egyptian Museum where we focus on the Mummies Room (its really worth showing the film a couple of days before arriving in Egypt). Finally wander through the bazaars and feel the buzz of downtown Cairo, it might be worth introducing the children to haggling.
Fly to Luxor, or Thebes as it was known in ancient times, whose breathtaking monuments are staggering to anyone of any age. Begin with a hot air balloon ride over Luxor for all the family before heading into the Valley of the Kings. Children adore the narrow winding entrances to the tombs and the vivid colour of the decorations. Head back to Luxor and take a felucca out on the Nile and watch the amazing sunset on the Nile.
The last leg of your journey takes you to Sharm El Sheikh on the coast, where you can leave land for the sea and discover the underwater world with some of the best snorkelling and diving in the northern hemisphere. When to travel
Egypt enjoys a mild climate, making it a good year round destination. However, temperatures increase as you travel due south. Cairo can be chilly between December and February, and very hot between June and September. But the heat in Egypt is made bearable by the northerly breeze that leads to a drop in temperature at night. Peak temperatures in Upper Egypt occur between May and October, and are accompanied by extremely low humidity. The best time to visit Cairo is in the cooler months between November and March
Cairo has long-standing populations of major religious groups and past colonial powers, so it’s possible to find celebrations for most every major holiday. Islam, however, is the prevailing force here, and the month of Ramadan is one of the most pronounced Islamic holidays. It happens in July or August, and during this time, some shops and restaurants may stay closed during the daytime fast.
