Description
The Okavango Delta is a unique mix of water, Kalahari sands and wildlife. A safari on horseback will take you through areas of bushman grass, fig islands and flood plains. You may get the opportunity to ride alongside zebra and giraffe as well as to see other wildlife such as elephant and buffalo. During the height of the flood, you can join semi-aquatic red lechwe as they thunder through the water meadows. After a long a exciting ride, cool off and relax under the shade of an acacia tree and enjoy a champagne breakfast.
Guests normally enjoy a long ride in the morning and a shorter, quieter ride in the evening as the sun sets. Alternatively you may wish to take a mokoro (a dug out canoe) through the lily-filled flood plains.
Rides can be arranged with an overnight stay in a fly camp deep in the bush. Fires are lit at night to create a strong human presence to keep predators away from the horses. Night watches are fun and guests usually join in.
From the lush waterways of the Delta, you will then head northwards to the open plains of Duba, where mighty battles are fought each day. Duba is world famous for its large population of buffalo and lion. Unusually, the prides of lion hunt during the day, resulting in titanic clashes which are often witnessed by guests. Also expect to see elephant, other plains game and a large variety of waterbirds which have made this varied and beautiful area their home.
Then end your safari with a trip south to the beautiful moonscapes of the Makgadikgadi Pans. Home to the San bushmen, take a walk with these fascinating people as they show you how they hunt, find water, and live in such a harsh environment. Or take a quadbike and venture deep into the Pans themselves, where horizon and sky blend into one. Visit the habituated meerkats, and talk to the scientists studying their antics, and then end your day with a sundowner on the pans as the sun sets and the moon rises simultaneously.
