Description
Close to San Jose Xandari Plantation is a relaxing start to your journey, surrounded by fig trees and exotic flora and hummingbirds. The hotel has spectacular views of the entire Central Valley and is filled with beautiful pieces of art. Walk some of the nature trails and relax by the pool or in the excellent spa.
Continue north to the wonderful farm property of Villa Blanca, overlooking vast swathes of cloudforest. The forest here is as rich in exotic flora and fauna as the more famous Monteverde, but has a fraction of the visitor numbers and is consequently infinitely more rewarding. Guests here can follow the trails that weave through the forest and relax at the end of the day in considerable comfort. The food here is notable for its organic ingredients fresh from the farm, and for its lovely spa. The lodge is also within easy reach of the famous Arenal and Poas volcanoes as well as superb white rafting.
From the cloudforest head for a relaxing few days at the wonderful Punta Islita Hotel overlooking the Pacific Ocean. This romantic retreat has a rustic-colonial elegance, a spectacular natural setting overlooking a secluded black-sand beach, and first rate service. Relax around the infinity pool or indulge in the wide range of luxury spa treatments available. Explore the area or indulge in a range of massage and spa treatments to relax and rejuvenate both body and mind.

When to travel
Costa Rica’s Central Valley enjoys a spring-like climate year round. In the tropical coastal areas the temperature is very warm and humid. Much of Costa Rica is covered by rainforest so expect rain at any time, but the drier season on the Pacific coast is from December to April and the rainier ‘green’ season is from May to November with the heaviest rainfall being in September and October. Christmas, New Year and Easter are incredibly popular so it is best to book well in advance.
