Description

Begin with three nights at the superb Legado Mitico in Buenos Aires, often called the Paris of South America. Here you can stroll its wide and leafy boulevards, take in a dazzling array of culture, eat the finest food or simply chat with the charismatic and friendly portenos as you sip coffee and watch the world go by. If you prefer more action, why not learn how to tango, or take polo lessons in one of the capital’s surrounding estancias?

Next fly to Salta, a magnificent colonial city that is the gateway to the magical and spectacular puna, a high-altitude desert with flamingo-filled saltpans, volcanoes and Andean villages frozen in time. During your stay here, there are also remote vineyards to explore, wonderfully preserved colonial towns and colourful cactus-studded landscapes. Stay 3 nights at the lovely House of Jasmines.

Continue to the Iguazu Falls, one of South America’s most iconic natural wonders. In addition to visiting the falls themselves, which you can do by boat, on foot or by helicopter, there are Jesuit missions to explore in the Misiones jungles, parrots and toucans flying overhead, and perhaps visit the little-known Mocona Falls, the world’s widest. Accommodation is for 2 nights at the lovely Posada Puerto Bemberg.

Finish in incomparable Rio, staying 3 nights at the gorgeous Hotel Santa Teresa, a boutique hotel with sensational views in the city’s bohemian quarter. Make sure you ride the cog railway to the Statue of Christ, take a cable car up the Sugar Loaf and top up your tan on one of those perfect Brazilian beaches.

Itinerary

When to travel

This itinerary crosses a few climatic zones, but can be done year round. Those seeking greater warmth should travel between October and March, while northwestern Argentina is idyllic from May to September with warm days and cool nights. Rio de Janeiro does get very full over Christmas/New Year and especially over Carnival week (usually in February) so if travelling at this time, we would recommend booking as early as possible.
