Description
Staying at beautiful colonial-style boutique hotels throughout, this lovely itinerary will introduce you to the fascinating and evocative history of Brazil.
Begin with three nights in Rio’s historic Santa Teresa district at the wonderfully atmospheric Hotel Santa Teresa, with its breathtaking views over Guanabara Bay and easy access to the Corcovado. Explore the city, taking in the Corcovado and Sugar Loaf, spend time on the beach, or visit Rio’s world-famous Botanic Gardens while you are here.
Fly to Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais and transfer to Ouro Preto, a magnificent colonial town built on gold and gemstones and filled with seventeenth- and eighteenth-century architecture, with exquisite baroque churches, narrow cobbled streets and an intangible atmosphere of bygone days. While here, stay two nights at the heritage hotel Pousada Solar do Rosario, and private tours of Ouro Preto and the nearby colonial towns of Mariana and Congonhas have been included. Then continue to Tiradentes, a blissfully quiet and timeless colonial town in the hills, where life carries on at the same pace as it has for centuries. Stay two nights at the exquisite Pousada Solar da Ponte.
Fly back to Rio and drive down the Emerald Coast to finish your journey by the sea in lovely Paraty, for many years South America’s most important port, and now a World Heritage listed colonial town. Gold, diamonds, slaves and much more all found their way here before being shipped across the seas. We would suggest four nights here at the wonderful Casa Turquesa, right in the heart of town. There are tropical islands in the bay to discover by boat, historic walking trails and a thriving cafe culture, which makes Paraty the ideal place to relax.
