Description

Begin this ultimate family wildlife adventure by flying to Quito, the attractive Ecuadorian capital at the foot of the Pichincha volcano, to stay 2 nights at the colonial-style Patio Andaluz. While here wander through old Quito and soak up the lively atmosphere.

After spending a couple of days in Quito you will then continue your journey into the breathtaking Amazon rainforest where the real adventure begins and to the wonderful riverside eco-lodge, the Napo Wildlife Centre. During your Amazon adventure expert naturalist guides will take you in small groups on fascinating excursions deep into the rainforest, on foot and in dugout canoes, in search spider monkeys, giant otters, caimans and other unusual flora and fauna – fun for the whole family! The lodge also has two parrot clay licks, bringing the action right to you and a 120ft canopy tower deep in the forest to experience life above the forest floor.

From the Amazon you will overnight back in Quito before flying on to the incredible Galapagos Islands straddling the equator some 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador. Here you will board one of the identical motor yachts the Eric/Flamingo/Letty for a week's wildlife cruise around this amazing archipelago. The Eric/Flamingo/Letty are excellent for families looking for an intimate Galapagos experience, as there are just 10 cabins onboard and during the school holidays they offer fantastic family friendly departures. Family departures are geared towards families who prefer to travel with other families with other similar aged children and feature age-appropriate activities balancing learning with fun for the entire family.

The guiding aboard the Eric/Flamingo/Letty is some of the best in the Galapagos and you will be taken on two wonderful excursions a day following Darwin's footsteps in search of iconic species such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies and playful sea lions. The wildlife is incredibly tame and you will get up close and personal with such a wide range of species. Being able to snorkel and kayak while on the cruise is a real highlight.

When to travel

Ecuador & the Galapagos can be visited year round. The Amazon has a hot and wet climate year round. From January to June is the hot season in the Galapagos and sees sunny days and blue skies interspersed with showers, while the rest of the year is generally cloudier and cooler. From July to September the seas can be heavier. The average temperature ranges from a pleasant 20°C to 28°C, however being on the equator the sun is very strong. Due to limited permits we advise to book well in advance.
