Description
Begin by flying into Lima for a night at the comfortable Posada del Inca El Olivar. The following day, fly to Cuzco and transfer to Urubamba in the Sacred Valley. This valley which runs almost from Cuzco to Machu Picchu was and is a holy place for the Incas, and there is a greater density of archaeology here than anywhere else on earth. The valley is incredibly beautiful with high snow-capped peaks guarding the sacred Urubamba River, and colourful market towns and ancient sites to explore. Stay at the charming Sol y Luna where you can go horse riding, rafting and much more.
Board the Vistadome train for a thrilling train journey to Machu Picchu, where you will receive a private guided tour of this most iconic of ancient sites. Stay overnight at El Mapi Inn, a comfortable base in Aguas Calientes.
Return by train and road to Cuzco, the ancient Inca capital, and one of the most interesting cities in the Americas. Spanish colonial architecture sits on top of Inca masonry, and there are many narrow streets and squares, great museums and wonderfully evocative sites like the temple of Sacsayhuaman to explore. We have suggested the boutique Casa San Blas, located in the artistic quarter of Cuzco.
Next comes one of the unanticipated highlights of the trip, a full day's train journey across the altiplano to Puno aboard the Orient Express operated Andean Explorer. Take in the huge landscapes from the observation car, and enjoying a 3-course lunch while on board. On arrival transfer to the Libertador, located with fabulous views on the shores of Lake Titicaca. While here, take a boat trip onto the lake to visit the fascinating indigenous communities that live on floating reed islands, or perhaps visit the imposing Sillustani graves.

When to travel
April to October is best for time for visiting Peru’s Andean region and main highlights. It is typically sunny in the day and cold at night due to altitude. Heavy rains last from December to end of February with January and February being the wettest months. Peru is very popular in the high season, especially during their many cultural festivals such as Inti Raymi on 24 June, so best to book well in advance.
