Description

Situated just north of the Hill Country and a stones throw from Kandy, Ellerton benefits from the best of Sri Lanka's weather with warm days and relatively cool evenings, much like an English summer. Set in beautiful gardens, Ellerton comprises 6 comfortable double bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms, a spring fed swimming pool and wonderful views in all directions. It has the air of a classic holiday home in Cornwall or Scotland, no fuss and very relaxed, making it ideal for young families who are looking for ease rather than necessarily overt luxury. The large sitting room is the centre of the Main House; furnished with antiques it is a great place to gather before dinner or to play cards later in the evening. The dining room, used on cooler evenings or more formal dinners, seats 12 while the dining terrace set in stunning gardens should be taken advantage of as much as possible when it is warm enough to do so. The house has 3 guest bedrooms, two doubles and one twin, all with their own bathrooms. The twin bedroom and one of the double bedrooms have attached rooms with a single bed which can be used as triples. Beside the swimming pool and some thirty yards away from the main house is the new Valley House. With spectacular views down the valley it has three generous bedrooms, consisting of two double and a twin. The double bedrooms have large bathrooms with baths and walk in showers, whilst the twin has a shower. The Valley House's huge veranda is a natural place to cool off in the shade and curl up with a book. The two Chefs produce excellent and varied menus each day including fantastic Sri Lankan curries as well as simple English dishes for less adventurous younger pallets! This property is all about the immediate local surroundings and in particular the beautiful gardens full of interesting flowers, butterflies and birds - for some this will be a highlight.

Accommodation

Ellerton has 6 comfortable double and twin bedrooms, some well set up for families split between the Main House and the Valley House. The Valley House rooms are newer and more modern in design and there is an extensive verandah providing welcome shade from the midday sun.

Childcare

While there is no child care, children and families are very welcome. Children will enjoy mountain biking in the local area and a visit to the Elephant Orphanage at Pinnewala roughly 1.5 hrs away from the hotel by car.

Facilities

Facilities at Ellerton include a dining terrace, swimming pool and there are mountain bikes for guests to take out and explore the stunning surroundings.

Activities

Explore the lush tropical landscape by foot or mountain bike, go swimming in the beautiful infinity edge pool with stunning views overlooking the jungle, or take a trip to explore some of the local destinations. Kandy is home to the Temple of the Tooth, the renowned Buddhist site, and the botanical gardens at Peredeniya are not to be missed either.

When to travel

Year round destination. Because the Hill Country it so high up it rarely gets unbearably hot. The months of December to April are probably the best time to visit, as temperatures rise to around 28C during the day but cool down at night. During the monsoon season from October to December you can expect heavy downpours. June to September are the driest months here, when there’s almost no rain at all.

Location and directions

Gampola

Ellerton sits on a hilltop, roughly 18km south of central Kandy, close to the geographic centre of Sri Lanka.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Colombo Bandaranayake Airport (120km), roughly 3-hours by car but you are more likely to arrive with a driver as part of a trip around Sri Lanka. The last leg of the journey entails some hairpin bends on very steep gradients - not for the fainthearted.
