Description

Soneva are the pioneers of ’intelligent luxury’ in the Maldives, nowhere evokes the Robinson Crusoe style better than the exemplary resort, of Soneva Fushi. The resort is set on the privately owned, tropical island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll. It can be reached with scenic 30-minute sea plane flight from Male.

Apart from the crystal clear waters, white beaches and tropical climate, the island’s unusually rich vegetation offers a unique natural experience. The very spacious and stylish villas are built from wood and palm thatch, beautifully furnished with natural materials yet containing every conceivable luxury and they are nestled in the palm-fringed beaches that lead to the azure lagoon contained within a coral reef.

The service is faultless and the food divine, although it is the sense of privacy that comes from having only 65 villas on an island a mile long that continues to make Soneva Fushi one of our favourites.

Central to the property is the Spa experience. The Soneva Fushi Spa has a large reflecting pond and water falls which calmly set the tone for soul therapy. Guests may chose from a refreshing menu of holistic and traditional treatments conducted by highly skilled therapists using all natural products. Spa programmes are complimented by a complete gym, beachside treatment villas and a Yoga Pavilion for wellness therapies such as yoga and Tai Chi.

Not content to rest on its laurels, Soneva Fushi has introduced innovations such as an organic tree top restaurant, private spa suites, an open air cinema and a champagne bar to keep their unique island concept feeling fresh.

When to travel

The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.

Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.
