Description

Located on the Lhaviyani Atoll, Kanuhura is in a totally undeveloped part of the Maldives archipelago and is surrounded by hundreds of uninhabited islands and unexplored dive sites. The 26 natural atolls which make up the Maldives, contain some 1200 coral islands, infinite sandbanks and reeds spread over 90,000 square kilometres of Indian Ocean.

Only 200 of these islands are inhabited, while an additional 90 have been transformed into resorts.

The island has 100 villas, located either on the white powder beach, or over the crystal clear turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. Each villa has its own private outdoor area overlooking the sea. Dining options are varied and range from the international, Mediterranean and Asian fusion restaurants on Kanuhura, to lunch at Cove’s, which offers desert island fine dining on a neighbouring private island. Tables can also be arranged for a private meal outside your villa or even on a deserted sand bank.

To entertain your children there is a fully equipped kid’s club, which is open from 0900hrs to 2200hrs daily and is free of charge for children aged 4-11 years old. For the older children, Club One caters for 12-17 year olds and organises a variety of activities, sports and excursions.

A diverse range of treatments and a comprehensive range of facilities, within beautifully wooden interiors, provide guests with a sanctuary for relaxation and overall body care. Signature massages like the Aroma Stone Therapy and Maldivian Theyo Dhemun are a “must-try”. The spa also has a fully equipped fitness centre, aerobics studio, spa boutique, and separate steam bath, dry sauna, cold plunge pools and Jacuzzis, for ladies and gentlemen. The spa has eight treatment rooms including four doubles. The outdoor spa pavilion is the ideal setting for massages overlooking the lagoon.

When to travel

The Maldives has a tropical climate distinguished by two seasons, or monsoons: the dry northeast monsoon from December to March, and the wet southwestern monsoon from May to November, with more strong winds and rain. April is a transitional period noted for clear water and heat. The temperature remains remarkably consistent at around 30°C.

February to April is the hottest period and resorts are almost all operating at capacity during this period. Mid-December to early January comes at even more of a premium due to Christmas and New Year and prices are even higher. Easter and the Italian holiday week in August also attract peak prices at most resorts.

Storms are more likely from May to November, though it’s still warm, skies can be cloudy and the humidity is higher. This is the low season, with fewer people and lower prices, with the exception of August.

Diving is good year-round, although a basic rule is that life on the reef is more varied and visibility better on the western side of any atoll from May to November and from the eastern side of any atoll December to April.

The surfing season runs from March to October, which is when resorts are cheapest.
