Description

The Gateway Hotel Ganges is set amidst 40 acres of lush green gardens, a haven of peace and tranquility in the crowded and ancient temple city of Varanasi. The hotel is only 6 kms away from the city centre and the commercial hub. Varanasi, situated on the left (west) bank of the River Ganga, has been a cultural and religious centre in northern India for several thousand years and is held in high regard by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains.

The hotel has 130 rooms and suites, and are all tastefully furnished to a high standard with views of the gardens or swimming pool. All the rooms offer tea and coffee makers, mini bar, safe, colour LCD TV with satellite, direct dial telephones and data port facilities.

There are two dining options; an international restaurant called ‘Chowk’ that serves a variety of cuisine and an Indian speciality restaurant ‘Varuna’. The hotel has a swimming pool, tennis court and a children’s activity centre as well a colonial themed bar. The hotel has wonderful gardens to walk around in – and the hotel itself is the best on offer in Varanasi.

Varanasi is famous for its fine art and literature culture and there are plenty of great museums to visit. Other local attraction include the Ramnagar Fort, built by Kashi Naresh Raja Balwant Singh in the 18th century. It is a typically Mughal style of architecture with carved balconies, open courtyards, and picturesque pavilions.

When to travel

The best season to visit Varanasi is between October and March when the temperatures are a in a comfortable range of 5-25 °C. This is a good time to be out sightseeing as the weather is pleasant and very cool. The winter months are also when festivals are celebrated with enthusiasm and fervour in Varanasi. Dussehra and Bharat Milap are celebrated in quick succession in September/October followed by the festival of lights - Diwali. The Ganga Festival also takes place in November and this is the time when people come from far and near to pay obeisance to the holy river - Ganges.

The summer lasts from April to September/October and it gets really hot at this time with the temperatures shooting up to 45°C at the height of the season in May and June. The rains come in July and August bringing the temperatures down marginally but the humidity levels rise.

How to get there

8.5-hour international flight to Mumbai Chattrapathi Shivaji Airport, followed by a 1-hour domestic flight to Varanasi Airport. The Gateway Hotel is a 45-minute drive from the airport.
