Description

With stunning views over the Arabian Sea and located just next to the Gateway of India monument, the Taj Mahal stands as one of Bombay’s iconic structures in its own right. It is the flagship property of the Taj Group and successfully blends the heritage with the modern.

Its 560 rooms including 44 suites are tastefully decorated with many housing antiques and artwork. The Tower Wing, built in 1973 by American architect Melton Bekker, houses 275 rooms offering a mix of European style and Indian elegance with views overlooking the city or the Gateway of India and the Arabian Sea. Taj Club rooms feature rosewood floors and high ceilings and are equipped with a Sony Bravia home theatre system, luxurious Italian marbled bathrooms with a bathtub and a separate shower cubicle (with hydro massage hand showers and overhead rain showers).

The hotel has 7 restaurants, 2 bars and a nightclub. It also houses the Taj Group’s flagship Jiva Spa, an outdoor and indoor swimming pool. You can take to the seas in the hotel's yacht with all the modern comforts you need including three air conditioned bedrooms, a salon complete with a bar and entertainment system. The cruise takes you across to the periphery of Elephanta Island to view medieval period caves.

When to travel

It is best to avoid the monsoon months (June to September) while planning a trip to Mumbai. During this time Mumbai becomes a big overflowing pothole. Generally the best time when to go to Mumbai is between October to April. During this time the air remains very pleasant and the relative humidity in the air becomes low. In the months of August and September Mumbai celebrates its biggest festival the Ganesh Chaturthi. This festival is celebrated to honour the Elephant headed God called Ganesha who is a very revered and benign god in the Hindu mythology. The event is worth watching as huge processions carrying massive idols of the divine figures are carried to the sea beaches where they are submerged. The event is a spectacle of true Indian culture that no one should miss.
