1650 metres above sea level in Lao Cai Province, near the Chinese Border, Sapa was originally a French hill station partially chosen due its cool climate. Today it is still home to more than 30 colourful hill tribes and Vietnam's highest peak, Mount Fansipan. It is an area of stunning natural beauty and fascinating cultural diversity and days can be spent here being as energetic or relaxed as you like - with options including trekking, mountain biking or simply wandering through the markets or curling up with a good book and enjoying the spectacular valley views.

The best time to visit is October to April with the least rain in these months. December to February are the cooler months. May to September is the rainy season with the most rain failing in July and August and typhoons are possible.
