Description

Playa Vik is the newest property in the uber exclusive fishing village of Jose Ignacio, located approximately 12 miles northeast of the glitzy party town of Punta del Este. It has a majestic setting, perched on a small hill, with sweeping views across the Atlantic Ocean and the stunning Playa Mansa below, which has a sunset like no other in the country.

Playa Vik has six individual casitas from two to three bedrooms and a central 'Sculpture building', which houses a further four suites, a living room furnished with sofas and offbeat sculptural pieces, a formal dining room, a library furnished with a small selection of books, a games room, a couple of small treatment rooms and a 40ft wine cellar, as well as a stunning, elevated infinity pool jutting out towards the Atlantic.

With its distinctive style, Playa Vik is ideal for guests who enjoy cutting edge architecture and art, and an oceanfront getaway with casas that feel more like chic urban apartments. Contemporary artwork from Uruguay and beyond (by artists including Zaha Hadid, Anselm Kiefer and James Turrell) grace the walls of the main building, which has a dramatic, 55-foot inclined facade and wide expanses of glass that maximize the ocean views.

Cuisine is similar to that served at the sister property Estancia Vik, with a focus on expertly prepared, freshly caught seafood, locally grown vegetables, and plenty of Uruguayan beef. The property’s indoor dining room has large glass windows that look out on the beach. In this outdoor area is plenty of barbecue space, a 14-foot dining table and a fire pit surrounded by comfortable seating, ideal for warming up on chilly evenings.

Fantastic restaurants and great nightlife await down the road in Punta del Este. Dance till dawn, sleep in till noon, lounge by the pool, stroll along the beach, surf, indulge in decadent food and wine, learn to play polo and horseback ride at Estancia Vik and master the art of laid back luxury!

When to travel

November to March is the ideal time to visit weather wise. The very popular peak summer season from Christmas to mid-February gets booked up well in advance so best to plan early. During this period the whole place comes alive and there is a great party atmosphere. It is worth bearing in mind however that during the quieter season - including November, many of the area's bars and restaurants are closed which does tend to restrict eating options to your hotel.
