Description

Hotel Plaza Grande has a fabulous location facing Quito’s central square and is surrounded by characteristic buildings: the Metropolitan Cathedral, Government Palace, the Archbishop’s Palace and the modern City Hall. It was one of the first hotels to be opened in the city, back in the 16th century and has today been lovingly restored to become one of Quito's finest boutique hotels, preserving all the original colonial charm.

Step back in time in one of the hotel's 15 luxury suites, with the most elegant of furnishings. The decoration in earth tones has Victorian touches with extensive use of fine dark woods in the uniquely designed furniture, wall fixings, ceilings and floors. Fresh flowers in every room are part of the decoration and bathrooms are very spacious, each with a jacuzzi and heated floor.

The main dining room is La Belle Époque, which overlooks the Plaza and specializes in high gourmet French cuisine. The Café Plaza Grande serves traditional local cuisine and at The Cloister Wine Bar, open every evening, guests can enjoy live music in a medieval ambiance. A Cognac and Cigar Bar and a Champagne Bar are located on the upper floor and a gym, small spa, sauna and massage room is located on the first floor.

Accommodation

The 15 luxury suites at Plaza Grande are tastefully decorated with fine carved wood furniture, grand chandeliers and plush beds with fine linens, plus modern comforts such as television and air conditioning. The 11 Royal Suites include a small sitting area, the 3 Plaza View Suites have a small sitting area and views of the Plaza de Independencia and Panecillo hill. The Presidential Suite is the height of luxury, with a lounge, dining room, kitchen and 3 balconies overlooking the square.

Childcare

Children are welcome at Hotel Plaza Grande. There are no formal children's facilities although babysitting, cots and extra beds can all be arranged on request.

Facilities

Facilities at Hotel Plaza Grande include a gourmet French Restaurant, another restaurant offering Ecuadorian specialties, a cosy wine cellar, champagne bar and lobby bar, gym, small spa and sauna. The hotel also has its own carriage for evening rides around Quito's historic quarter.

Activities

Guests at Plaza Grande Hotel are perfectly located to explore the beautiful city of Quito, a World Heritage site and one of the best preserved colonial cities in the Americas, with a wealth of beautiful churches, monasteries and other historical buildings. It is possible to arrange a ride on the teleferico cable car, with fantastic views over the city and the snow-capped mountains or a trip to one of the colourful Indian markets such as Otavalo or Saquisili.

When to travel

All year round destination. Due to its position on the equator and its altitude, Quito’s temperature varies greatly between night and day. Daytime temperatures average 23-25ºC, while at night temperatures drop to around 10ºC. In general, days are clear in the morning and cloud over in the afternoon, with rain common in the afternoon. The drier season runs from the end of May to the end September, with another brief summertime in early December (which coincides nicely with the city’s fiestas).
