Description

Estancia Cerro Guido, a traditional working ranch dating back to the late 19th century, has a superb setting at the foot of the Sierra Contreras, just 30 minutes from the entrance to Torres del Paine National Park. The estancia is set in over 90,000 hectares of land, with some 50,000 sheep and more than 20 original buildings including the lodge, main house, kitchen, bakery, school, carpentry workshop, forge, dairy and stable.

Estancia Cerro Guido is one of the last remaining traditional Patagonian estancias in the area, retaining much of its original history. Guests receive a warm, homely welcome and can gain a unique insight into the local culture, with a chance to meet with the resident's of the estancia and participate in the livestock activities.

The views of the spectacular Paine Massif from the estancia are simply breathtaking, including those from the restaurant, where delicious regional gastronomy is served, including typical spit roasts and barbecued lamb. Most of the ingredients used in the meals are grown in the estancia's organic farm and gardens and some of the wines are from the owner's vineyard.

In addition to the comfortable facilities at the estancia, including a cosy lounge and library, guests can also enjoy various outdoor activities, such as hiking and lake tours within the National Park, horseback rides and rural tasks typical of the area.

Accommodation

Guests at Cerro Guido are accommodated in 10 comfortable guest rooms decorated in a simple country style, with period furniture, hardwood floors and cosy furnishings. Some of the rooms have their own fireplace and all have ensuite bathrooms.

Childcare

Children are welcome at Cerro Guido although there are no formal children's facilities. A stay here is most likely to suit slightly older children, who will enjoy the adventurous side of exploring the park and will be able to participate in some of the outdoor activities.

Facilities

Estancia Cerro Guido has an excellent restaurant serving delicious regional cuisine in a wonderful setting overlooking the Pain Massif. There is also a cosy sitting room and library with open fire, perfect for relaxing and enjoying a glass of Chilean red after a day in the outdoors.

Activities

Many activities are offered at Cerro Guido including horse riding and trekking in the surrounding area and in Torres del Paine National Park, boat trips to the Grey glacier and road excursions around the park. Depending on the time of year guests may also join in with some of the livestock activities at the estancia.

When to travel

Cerro Guido is open from 1 October to 30 April.

Early summer (November) can be lovely, and in late summer and autumn (March) the colours are stunning. But if you’re planning to go riding in the open steppes, midsummer is wonderful. Avoid the peak summer months of January and February, since the trails in the park are particularly crowded at this time. At any time of year, Torres del Paine has its own microclimate: unpredictable. People will often tell you to expect all seasons in a single day.
