Description
Set in a private reserve on a stunning stretch of Pacific coastline amongst old-growth Valdivian rainforest, The Cliffs Preserve is an awe-inspiring luxurious eco-retreat that will bring you close to nature in one of the most beautiful locations in the world. The forests harbour ancient olives, giant alerce trees and a multitude of fauna from the shy puma to rare marsupials and brilliantly coloured hummingbirds. Offshore is an incredible diversity of marine life, including the blue whale, penguins, numerous sea lion colonies and the rare Southern Marine Otter.
Suites are built from local wood, and are spacious and impeccably decorated, full of light and with breathtaking ocean views. The gourmet restaurant features local ingredients. Fresh Pacific King Crab and Abalone, Patagonian Lamb, Sea Bass, Mussels and Clams, along with vegetables and herbs from the organic garden, are some of the specialities that will inspire you, and there is a fabulous collection of Chilean wines.
A spa and wellness retreat ensures that you can be pampered to your heart’s desire, while outdoors an extraordinary range of activities awaits. There are more than 20 miles of hiking, coastal and horseback riding trails at all levels that weave through the forests and open fields, or take you across pristine surf-pounded beaches and high ridges, all with breathtaking views. Kayaking, birdwatching, cultural tours to visit Mapuche Indian communities, heli-fishing, superb trout angling and white water rafting are just some of the adventures on offer.

When to travel
The main season runs from November to April - the Chilean spring/summer, when all activities are possible. It's also worth visiting in autumn, when it's still very beautiful for simply relaxing and hiking. The small ski resort being built on the volcano means that even winter brings its own draw. The area is prone to rain all year but is wettest in July and driest between January and March. Visit in early February to catch Frutillar's classical music festival.
