Nicaragua is a land of striking beauty, from tropical rainforests, rugged highlands, remote beaches and fertile plains to serenely beautiful Lake Nicaragua. It is the largest country in Central America but also one of the least explored. Bordering Honduras to the north and Costa Rica to the south, about half of Nicaragua’s territory consists of the eastern lowlands, known as the Mosquito Coast, which extend 40 miles inland from the Caribbean. Nicaragua has no shortage of attractions with volcanoes to climb, rainforests brimming with wildlife, and gorgeous colonial cities to explore, chief among which are Granada and Leon. The Pacific beaches are unspoiled, while the markets offer colourful arts and crafts. Scott Dunn’s highlights for Nicaragua:
- Visit the secluded Jicaro Island in the centre of Lake Nicaragua, where it is possible to take yoga classes over looking the Mombacho Volcano.
- Explore the beautiful Spanish colonial town, Grenada. Take a horse drawn carriage to view Grenada’s brilliant architecture.
- Relax or learn to surf on the Pacific Coast, perhaps staying at the wondeful Mukul Resort & Spa.
