Description

Parador San Juan de Dios is a lovely converted town house located in one of the oldest neighbourhoods of San Cristóbal de las Casas, in Mexico's Chiapas region. The buildings originally date back to the 17th and 19th centuries and historically the property was dedicated to the farming and milling of wheat.

The hotel has twelve rooms and suites, which are all charmingly decorated with local furniture, antiques and handicrafts. The hotel has wonderfully kept gardens and a restaurant serving traditional Mexican Chiapas dishes and Mediterranean cuisine. Produce is fresh and organic, and taken from the Parador’s garden, and cooked in a traditional log-burning oven.

Parador San Juan de Dios is a great base for exploring San Cristóbal, with a rich indigenous culture and one of Mexico's most picturesque colonial towns, whose cobbled streets are lined with colourful houses and churches. It is also well located for excursions to the impressive Sumidero Canyon.

There is also a gallery exhibiting local textiles, artworks and sculptures.

Activities

Parador San Juan de Dios is an excellent base from which to explore the charming town of San Cristóbal de las Casas, with a deep rooted indigenous culture, a wealth of colourful houses and churches and an impressive setting, surrounded by mountains in the Chiapas highlands. From here it is also possible to arrange excursions to the colourful indian villages of San Juan Chamula and Zinacantan, as well as the Sumidero Canyon. At Parador San Juan de Dios it is possible to arrange massages.

When to travel

Chiapas and the surrounding highlands have a temperate climate, and daytime temperatures generally remain warm all year round. Nights can be pleasantly cool in summer (June-October), but in the winter you’ll be glad there are blankets and fires in the rooms. Nestling in front of an open log fire can be very romantic - just bear in mind the nightly drop in temperature when you book your trip. The rainy season lasts from June to September.
