Barbados

Barbados is characterised by its English colonial history, festive street life, exquisite restaurants, and some of the most luxurious hotels in the Caribbean. The island is predominantly flat, with a few gently rolling hills to the north. The west coast is lined with fine white sand and natural coral reefs, and along the east coast there’s a lively surf as the sea pounds the rocky shoreline. Scott Dunn’s highlights for the Barbados:

• For a change of scenery from Barbados’s white sand beaches, visit the Andromeda Botanic Gardens, near to Bathsheba for an abundance of tropical plants.
• Gain a deeper understanding of the complex history of Barbados by visiting some of the most impressive colonial plantation houses, such as St Nicholas Abbey.
• Be sure to explore the calm beaches in the south west coast of Barbados, such as Paynes Bay. Here there are miles white sand that are perfect to pass a few hours on.
• Barbados is known for its surf. Where the eastern coast meets the Atlantic Ocean the continuous swells make Barbados the perfect place to try this sport.
