At a glance

  • Royal Livingstone afternoon tea in the drawing room, accompanied by the piano.

  • In the evening, wander down the lawns to the cocktail deck and try a Zambian cocktail or two.

  • The Victoria Falls are extremely close; a mere five minute walk away and close enough to see the spray from your room.

  • You may spot the odd zebra or warthog in the grounds of the hotel; they are very friendly.

  • In the evenings, enjoy drinks in the quirkily designed bar with its piles of antique suitcases.

Description

The Royal Livingstone Hotel is named in honor of the explorer Dr. David Livingstone, and it's interior design reflects the elegance of days gone bye using an African architectural style.

The Royal Livingstone Hotel stretches luxuriously along the banks of the Zambezi River close to the Victoria Falls. The main hotel is a sequence of thatch roofed buildings, most of them African in their influence, which incorporate the lounge, restaurant and bar. A classic swimming pool visually links the waters of the river with the terraces of the hotel, with a sweeping timber deck planted in the swirling waters of the Zambezi.

The Sun Deck is a lovely area built directly over the Zambezi, and affording views of the Falls, is a favorite for light lunches and early evening drinks.

Zambia's tourist capital the historic town of Livingstone has become one of the best travelling destinations in Africa. Most visitors come for Victoria Falls, but the town has attractions of its own - a genteel colonial history combined with a very African ambience. Livingstone is only a short distance from the falls and is not far from the national parks.

The large but tidy Livingstone Museum on Mosi-oa-Tunya Road is the oldest museum in Zambia. Highlights are the Tonga ritual artifacts, life-size model African village, a collection of David Livingstone memorabilia and display of maps dating back to 1690.

Mukuni is a local village of about 7000 Leya people. Tourists can visit the village to find out more about their traditional way of life, while the admission fee helps fund community projects.

The village is 18km (11mi) southwest of Livingstone and only accessible by taxi.
