In the far west of Zambia lies the Liuwa Plains, one of the remotest and least visited parks in the whole of Zambia. The Liuwa Plain National Park covers an area the size of Majorca, mostly flat plains and pans which fill during the rains.
Previously only visited on bespoke private safaris accompanied by a guide, Robin Pope Safaris has started sending trips there, and have built a camp – Matamanene Camp – to accommodate them.
The Liuwa Plains is perhaps most famous for its lonely lioness – the Lady Liuwa – who was on her own for years and years. She was totally unused to any form of company, and, when the camp was first built, she developed the unnerving habit of sleeping in the dining room because she enjoyed the company! The park has now been given two male lions with which she now spends her time.
Quite apart from Lady Liuwa, the park plays host to an enormous number of plains game – blue wildebeest, tsessebe, zebra, red lechwe, eland and buffalo. The herds number in their tens of thousands, meaning incredible game-viewing and very happy predators. The Robin Pope Safaris trips depart in May/June and November/December; when the game is at its best and the birding absolutely superb. These are adventurous trips, led by one of RPS’s top guides, and exploring a largely unknown and uncharted area.
The trips are set departures, and led by Robin Pope himself – choose from a four-night trip or a five-night trip. Because the Liuwa is such a protected and pristine area, there are relatively few trips to choose from.
