Johannesburg and surrounds

Johannesburg is the largest and most populous city in South Africa and though not one of the country’s three capitals, is home to its highest court. Due to its location on the mineral-rich Witwatersrand range of hills, Johannesburg is the source of South Africa’s famous gold and diamond trade, and is the city in which Nelson Mandela chose to stay (and write Long Walk to Freedom) on his release from Robben Island. The leafy suburb of Sandton, just 40 minutes from OR Tambo International Airport, is the perfect place to relax for a night when travelling between Kruger National Park and Cape Town, or before connecting onward to Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Mozambique, Mauritius or the Seychelles.
