Description

The Manor at Samara is a historic homestead offering breathtaking views of the extraordinary Karoo mountain landscape. The style of the Manor is the inspiration of well known South African designer, John Zwiegelaar of John Jacob Interiors.

The Manor at Samara can accommodate eight guests in four luxury rooms with en suite bathrooms featuring separate showers and free standing tubs. The Manor is bookable on an exclusive basis and provides a perfect family bush experience.

Unwind in the large comfortable lounge where a fire burns in the winter months and the large glass doors to the patio are cast wide open in the summer or relax with a good book in the library. Dining can be enjoyed in the boma, veranda, dining room and breakfast room as well as various bush locations. The 21m infinity pool overlooks waterhole where game sightings are frequent in the early morning and late afternoon.

Stretching from the dramatic mountains of the Karoo to the magnificent plains of Camdeboo, Samara encompasses 28,000 hectares of land, and offers a magnificent game experience in an East African style.

Childcare

Children are welcome at the Manor. Samara's Aardvark programme especially caters for children, taking them on adventure safaris, providing a wealth of activities and hosting young children at the lodge while parents take a break. Activities include tracking, orienteering, star naming, trampoline tennis, croquet, table tennis, face painting, treasure hunts, crafting with African beads and Spekboom planting.

Facilities at the Manor include a swimming pool, wellness centre and boma.

Activities

Game drives are complimentary at the lodge but spa treatments are charged on an additional basis. Other activities include trekking through the bush, birding safaris and exploring the Khoisan paintings of the ancient San people or hunter gathers that walked the Samara plains thousands of years ago.

When to travel

Game viewing is excellent all year round. Summers (October to March) are hot and wet, were as winters (May to August) are cool and dry. Daytime temperatures in summer are high and may soar above 36°C/97°F. Winter is known to produce beautiful warm days, though the evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly.

Location and directions

Karoo

Stretching from dramatic mountain terrain to the sweeping Plains of Camdeboo, the Samara Private Game Reserve encompasses 28,000 hectares of spectacular Karoo wilderness, in the Graaff-Reinet region of the Eastern Cape.

How to get there

The Manor is a 2-2.5 hours drive from Port Elizabeth. Guest can self-drive directly to Samara or fly into Port Elizabeth from where the lodge can assist with transfers. Samara also boasts a private landing strip for direct charter to the lodge.
