Description

The Karoo Lodge is a luxurious colonial style homestead providing a perfect family bush experience. Stretching from the dramatic mountains of the Karoo to the magnificent plains of Camdeboo, Samara encompasses 28,000 hectares of land, and offers a magnificent game experience in an East African style.

The Karoo Lodge at Samara has ten suites. Three of these are luxury lodge suites (within the main lodge) that open out onto the spacious covered patio surrounding the home with views of the amphitheatre of mountains and seven are Karoo suites (individual suites outside the main lodge) all with private patios.

There are also indoor and outdoor dining areas, lounge areas, a bar area, a swimming pool, and a Karoo kitchen. At the end of a day exploring the game reserve indulge in a relaxing massage in the comfort of your own room by the lodge's therapist or at the Samara spa.

The private Karoo bushveld offers breathtaking and far reaching views, 4 biomes, dramatic mountains, complex and diverse eco-systems and 60 mammal species including Cape Mountain zebra, giraffe, rhino, buffalo, antelope, aardvark and cheetah.

Accommodation

Karoo Lodge offers 3 luxury lodge suites and 7 Karoo suites.

Childcare

Children are welcome and there is a dedicated children's programme run daily. Only children 8 years and over are allowed on scheduled game drives. All children will experience a shortened, kiddies only Bumble game drive.

Facilities

Facilities at the lodge include a swimming pool, wellness centre and boma.

Activities

Game drives are complimentary at the lodge but spa treatments are charged on an additional basis. Other activities include trekking through the bush, birding safaris and exploring the Khoisan paintings of the ancient San people or hunter gathers that walked the Samara plains thousands of years ago.

When to travel

Game viewing is excellent all year round. Summers (October to March) are hot and wet, were as winters (May to August) are cool and dry. Daytime temperatures in summer are high and may soar above 36°C/97°F. Winter is known to produce beautiful warm days, though the evenings and early mornings can be quite chilly.

How to get there

The Karoo Lodge is a 2-2.5 hours drive from Port Elizabeth. Guest can self-drive directly to Samara or fly into Port Elizabeth from where the lodge can assist with transfers. Samara also boasts a private landing strip for direct charter to the lodge.
