Scott Dunn: ANYTHING ELSE IS JUST A HOLIDAY

Setting out early in the morning, you will first be taken to see the sun rise over the dunes - this is a beautiful sight, with the colours of the dunes changing as the sun passes over them. The air is still and cool, and it's a great time for photography - no dust or haze to blur your shots.

You then embark on your dune safari - traversing the mighty dunes and, at the hands of your skilled guide, driving right over the top of some of them. You'll hear the phenomena of the roaring dunes - as the land rover descends the steep dune slopes, the friction of the sand being compressed causes a vibration and an incredible sound - almost like whalesong. This is the roaring dunes, and it's an incredible thing to hear. Your guide will drive you to some of the best viewpoints, and there you will stop for coffee with nothing but the wide spaces of the Skeleton coast surrounding you. An utterly awe-inspiring morning's activity.

During a visit to the Himba Village, you will see how they eke out their existence in one of the harshest places on earth, breeding cattle and goats. The homesteads are small, circular hamlets of huts surrounding a fire, and you will be able to meet the occupants and learn about their lives. Himba women are famous for covering their bodies with a mixture of butter fat and ochre, giving them a reddish tinge, said to symbolize the colour of the earth.

So far, the Himba are largely untouched by outside influences, and maintain much of their traditional lifestyle. To spend a morning amongst the Himba is fascinating; children will run and play around you and the women will be very interested to see their picture on your camera!

Serra Cafema Camp has a number of excellent quad-bikes, perfect for exploring the surrounding area. Jump on a bike, accompanied by your superb guide and he will guide you along the Hartmann River Valley, a swathe of green slicing its way through the sand and rock of the Coast. Or venture further inland and visit the Marienfluss valley, softer and greener than the Hartmann.

Your expert guide will take you along these valleys, pointing out ancient tracks, old courses of the river, and even possibly dropping in to visit a Himba village. On the way back visit the "fairy circles", a phenomena of Namibia, and found in abundance here, with several theories as to how these circular patches of bare ground came about. You'll find them dotted across both Hartmann's and Marienfluss valleys.

After a fascinating and informative quad-bike ride, head back to the lodge for a sumptuous brunch.
