Description

Nxabega Okavango Safari Camp is unique in that it combines the Okavango water wilderness experience with the excitement of viewing the big game normally associated with ’land’ camps.

The lodge has been beautifully hand-crafted and was deliberately designed to ensure that its open-plan dining room, lounge, library and expansive decks all offer the best views over the endless floodplains of the delta. The ten tented suites are designed with an East African feel, with private sundecks and en-suite facilities. There is a choice of daily activities including meandering along the floodplains of the delta by mokoro, exploring the deeper channels by motor boat, nature walks accompanied by an unarmed professional guide or tracking game by open 4 x 4 safari vehicle in the mopane forests and open grasslands. The added highlight of an evening game drive by spotlight ensures you a complete Botswana experience.

Nxabega is located in riverine forest which is home to prolific birdlife, including the elusive Pel’s fishing owl, and fruit bats are attracted to the abundant fig trees, feeding on the juicy fruit after dark.

The camp is situated on the channels and lagoons of the southern, seasonal part of the Delta. This is one of the most important wetland sites remaining in Africa. In the wet season, the pans fill with water attracting flocks of flamingo and other migratory water birds.

Accommodation

Nine exclusive tented suites are strung out on either side of the handsome thatched guest areas of the camp. The look is rugged but very comfortable with burnished teak floors and cowhide rugs on the floors and large spinning fans to keep the heat at bay. Each room has a large en-suite shower with burnished teak floorboards, while a private wooden deck invites guests to contemplate the water’s edge.

Childcare

Children are welcome. Regretfully, children 5 years and younger cannot participate in the regular game

drives and makoro activities. Children 16 years and older can participate in guided walks and makoro

activities. Childminders can be booked at an additional cost. Children aged 6 to 11 years are accommodated on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion. Please check details when booking.

Facilities

Private bush dinners, breakfasts in bed, lamp-lit cocktails on a river island or a walking safari with al fresco picnic are provided with pleasure by Nxabega’s warm and friendly staff. There is a swimming pool for guests to enjoy between safaris.

Activities

Activities at Nxabega Okavango Safari Camp are all based around game viewing with an option of twice daily game drives - guests can explore the rich wildlife surrounding Nxabega on early morning and late afternoon / evening game drives in an open air safari vehicle, accompanied by an armed guide and tracker. Alternatively guests may chose to take a leisurely walk in the surroundings of the Camp to take in the sights, smells and sounds of the Okavango Delta, accompanied by an armed guide.

River cruises in an electrically powered ‘eco boat’ or mokoro are also on offer for guests to explore the waterways of the Okavango by boat in the company of an experienced guide. Learn the fascinating details of the Delta's network of channels, fringed by dense reeds and papyrus.

Birdwatching is excellent and fishing is permitted between the months of March and December.

When to travel

Botswana’s winter is during our British summer, and the weather is hot during the day, but it isn't a stifling heat, and cold at night. The summer months (British winter) can be hot and humid and there is a chance of rain. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between mid-December and runs through to mid-March.
