Description
Fianarantsoa is good place for an overnight stop on the road south from Antananrivo. Enjoy a view of the city from the hills that surround it. The gambling ‘market’ opposite the train station, where a form of roulette is played, is also an interesting, and possibly unique, sight. There is also a nearby tea estate to which visits can be arranged.
Tsara Guesthouse has 18 rooms of varying sizes equipped with cable TV, a safe and en-suite shower room. Each is simply but attractively furnished.
Evening meals are taken in the conservatory where very good French-style cuisine is served from an a la carte menu.
Accommodation
The 18 rooms of Tsara Guest House in both the main building and the annex vary in size, but all have en suite facilities.
Childcare
Although there are no specific child care facilities, children are most welcome at Tsara Guesthouse and babysitting can be arranged for those that require it.
Facilities
There is a small garden, a bar and a restaurant serving French cuisine. The latter is well thought of and busy with locals in the evenings.
Activities
The town of Fianarantsoa is vibrant with many craftsmen working within it and tea plantations a short distance away. Tsara Guest House is often a stop for people on the route between Isalo National Park and Antananarivo, or those on the way to Ranomafana or Andringitra National Parks.
When to travel
Any time of year is fine for a visit except from January to March, when heavy rainfall in many areas can make some roads all but impassable, and when there’s a high risk of cyclones in the east and northeast. In general, the best time to travel in most areas is April and October/November. The coolest time to travel anywhere is during the dry season (May to October).
Average maximum temperatures vary from about 30°C in coastal areas (higher in summer) to around 25°C on the hauts plateaux. In Antananarivo and other highland areas, temperatures during winter can drop to 10°C and even lower during the night.
