Description

The lodge at Elsa’s Kopje has been sensitively designed to blend in with the surrounding hillside and is located close to the original camp where George and Joy Adamson released Elsa the lioness into the wild.

Meru is ideal for those looking for something off-the-beaten-track and is well known for its bird life, with riverine and forest species as well as the arid dry country species. Regular sightings include elephant, white rhino, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena, giraffe and Grevy’s zebra.

The accommodation consists of nine open-fronted stone cottages with stunning views over open plains. Each cottage has a thatched roof and ensuite bathroom, with baths and showers built into the rocky hillside.

Children are very welcome and there is even a family cottage, which provides additional space for younger guests to have fun. Elsa’s Private House has been built into the hillside on the site of George Adamson’s original camp in ’Born Free’. It sleeps 4 and is perfect for small families.

When to travel

The main tourist season is in January and February, when the weather is hottest and driest. At this time, the animals in the wildlife parks tend to congregate more around the watercourses, making them easier to spot.

Northern and eastern Kenya temperatures vary from highs of up to 40°C during the day to less than 20°C at night. Rainfall in this area is sparse and, when it does occur, is often in the form of violent storms. July is usually the driest month, and November the wettest.

Location and directions

Meru National Park, Kenya

This is no doubt a luxurious oasis in the wilds of Meru National Park. Elsa's Kopje lodge blends into the hillside of Mughwango Hill. Meru is vast with arid, open plains dotted with Doum Palms and Baobab trees and lush vegetation along 13 rivers, like green ribbons, bisecting the Park.

How to get there

8-hour 40-minute British Airways international flight to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi. From the International Airport it's a 30-minute drive across Nairobi to Wilson Airport, where you will catch a 50-minute internal flight to the Mughwango airstrip. On arriving guests are transferred by 4 x 4 safari vehicle, just 5-minutes to the camp. Alternatively, there is a helicopter pad which is a 2-minute drive from the lodge. Elsa's can arrange private road transfers.
