An island hopping and cycle adventure awaits

The extraordinary geographical formation of the long, rugged Dalmatian coast offered an exciting mix of adventure and activity. We took two weeks to travel the Stegosaurus-like ridge, flying into Dubrovnik and out of Venice. We had a lot of ground to cover but we had set ourselves the challenge and we knew it could be done, it had to be done, whether on two, four, or no wheels, we would traverse this land.

Our zigzagging adventure turned out to be a highly satisfying and fulfilling way to take in all the sights. Travelling by bicycle, bus, car and ferry we ticked off the miles.

Highlights of our route included the sparkling marbled streets of Dubrovnik - a particular memory that still shines strong, are the many sundowners we enjoyed at Buza café, where you slot through a hole in the city walls, to discover an informal little bar perched on the rocks. It really is the most perfect spot to watch the sun’s descent.

The gem of Korcula is another walled city, with another incredible sunset bar called Café Massimo. In case I am starting to sound false in my hyperbolic claims, I ask… how often do you get to sip cocktails at the top of an ancient tower overlooking the sparkling ocean, while your deliciously cold Mohito is hoisted up to the top of your turret on a pulley system…? Exactly.

During our time in Croatia, the number of quiet sunsets we enjoyed would knock up a ridiculous tally, and every single one was quite literally a golden highlight. Picking a unique spot to wave goodbye to the glorious sun was never a challenge.

Our island hopping itinerary followed on from Dubrovnik, across to tiny the Mijet, to Korcula, followed by the stylish Havar, before on to Split, from where we set sail to Dungi Otok and Cres, then landing our voyage in Pula.

From here it went by land. Taking a bus over to Venice, where we enjoyed the closing chapter of our trip, bowing down in gratitude, awe and respect to the ‘Queen of the Adriatic’.

Renting bikes was a fantastic way to enjoy Croatia with the wind in your hair and the sun beating down on your back. We cycled around the lakes inland, or down to the sea to spend the day relaxing on the beach, or exploring the cobbled streets of the old towns.

Croatia was a wonderful country to discover and the scenery along the coast certainly deserves all my praise.
