Family mountain biking in the Blue Mountains

Written by Juliet Morris on 7 January 2011 in General,

This is a great activity for the whole family to enjoy. We were picked up from Montenegro bay and driven up into the mysterious mist that shrouds the luscious Blue Mountains. The journey was an unforgettable insight into the relentless, crazy Jamaican culture. We were transported to the summit in a colourful, graffiti covered, rickety old school bus, with the beats of reggae booming making the sides rattle. The infectious madness of the tour operators distracted our eyes from looking downwards at the steep edged drops at the side of the road. The group leader, Ziggy, was instructing us tourists in the Jamaican lingo, ‘Irie man’, and then laughing crazily at our mispronunciations. ‘Irie’, meaning all is good, and no worries, was quite a reassuring tactic of distraction as we wound up these narrow mountain roads.

The scenic descent winds through the lush tropical rainforest. Past cascading mountain waterfalls we continued our journey of discovery surrounded by Jamaica´s World Famous Blue Mountain Coffee plantations. The air became warmer and noisier as the jungle became thicker, teeming with life and the sounds of tropical birds. Stops were permitted whenever, whether for the perfect snap shot, or a need to rest and re-hydrate. The tour was well organised and of course super chilled out and brilliant fun, you must remember to take home a bag of gourmet Blue Mountains Coffee when you reach the bottom. After this excursion we stayed at Stawberry Hill, this mountain retreat has breathtaking views that makes one feel on the edge of the world! This beautiful property was the perfect reward after exerting ourselves with our mountain biking experience. While the Kids played in the pool I snuck off to treat myself in The Aveda Concept Spa. In my opinion it was the perfect adventure, enjoyed together as a family.
