Val d'Isère lines up Winter Olympics celebration

Winter sports enthusiasts taking a luxury ski holiday in Val d'Isère next month will be invited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Albertville Winter Olympics.

More than 1,800 athletes descended on various French resorts in 1992 to compete in the famous sporting showpiece and tourism chiefs in Val d'Isère are keen to remember the high-profile occasion.

A whole day of activities will be held on 14th February in order to mark the milestone, including a race on the Bellevarde Face, which will be open to all holidaymakers.

This will be a particularly poignant event, as it will retrace part of the route that was used in the downhill ski race in the 1992 Winter Olympics.

"The party atmosphere will continue in to the night with an Olympic party featuring a DJ, fireworks and a light show in 1992 Olympic colours," a tourism official noted.

One of the more memorable performances of the 1992 Games was that of American speed skater Bonnie Blair, who won both the 500-metre and 1,000-metre events.
