The number of travellers booking luxury Mediterranean holiday villas on the Spanish island of Mallorca may rise as more people are flying to the main airport, according to a survey.

A poll, conducted by car hire comparison website Car Hire Market, revealed that Spain was the most popular destination for British travellers over the last two months, with Mallorca's Palma airport being the most used.

Anel Bruns, who is product manager at the car hire company, said that the increase in people flying to the island, which is off the east coast of the Iberian country, could be down to the weather.

"As the Met Office warned late last year that December was almost certainly the coldest since records began, many Brits took to the skies and flew off to sunnier climes," he said.

Another popular location for people looking for luxury Mediterranean holiday villas is the Algarve in Spain's neighbouring country, which travel writer Marc da Silva called "high-end Portugal".
