Tailor made holidays: Machu Picchu is 'magnificent'

Britons who are planning to book a tailor made holiday in Peru should visit the magnificent ancient city of Machu Picchu, it has been claimed.

Travel writer Nicola Iseard recently visited the Incan ruin, which is located in the Andes mountain range, and described the sheer wonder of finally seeing the famous landmark.

She wrote on the Guardian: "It is magnificent. I have seen many images of the citadel, but to have it right in front of me - the mist-cloaked Wayna Picchu mountain towering behind like an apparition - blows me away.

"Not even the usual tourist crowds (there are none) would distract from its beauty, its drama."

According to Ms Iseard, holidaymakers should pay a visit to the Temple of the Sun, a semi-circular tower which features some of Machu Picchu's finest stonework, and a large granite sundial known as the Intihuatana.

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the discovery of Machu Picchu by the American explorer Hiram Bingham.
