Guatemala is a land of ancient and modern "contrasts"

The central American nation of Guatemala is a magical place for people planning luxury honeymoon holidays, as the contrast of ancient and modern is "unique", according to the destination's promotional body.

Visit Guatemala particularly recommended Guatemala City - the country's capital - and Antigua as must-see places for those on tailor made holidays.

"Guatemala City, modern and cosmopolitan is the capital of Guatemala and the colonial city of Antigua, declared a Heritage of Humanity Site by UNESCO, make up this magical region of contrasts," the organisation noted on its website.

"[The capital] presents a contrasting panorama between the colonial architecture and modern buildings, which, with its important museums and history monuments, offers the tourist a unique experience."

But there is so much more to Guatemala than these two cities; the northern region of El Peten is a naturally beautiful place, with its jungles shrouding ancient and mysterious temples from the Mayan age.
