Talior made holidays: Diwali is a great time to visit India

Diwali in India is a colourful affair

People planning to take a tailor made holiday in India could try and make sure their trip coincides with one of the country's biggest religious festivals.

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, will take place towards the end of October, is one of the biggest events in the Hindu calendar.

Many people in India will take part in the festival, which includes fantastic night-time parades of candles and fireworks.

The different regions of India tend to have their own twist on the festival, including Goa, where buildings are traditionally decorated with lamps, mango leaves and flowers.

The festival of Diwali signifies the mythical return of Lord Rama to vanquish the demon-king Ravana in the Hindu story. It is seen as a way to celebrate the victory of good over evil.

This year, the festival will be held on October 26th, however it changes yearly: in 2012, the festival will take place around November 13th.
