Kerala promises old world charm to visitors on luxury family holidays

Luxury family holidays to Kerala in India could be made all the more memorable with a trip to Fort Kochi.

The historic town is sprawled over an island chain off the coast of India's south-west coast, and boasts streets that are paved with history and culture.

Beyond the 16th century Portuguese fort around which the town developed, visitors will also be able to explore a Dutch cemetery – one of many signs from India's rich and colourful colonial history.

According to the official Kerala tourism agency, the best way to explore Fort Kochi is by foot.

Kerala Tourism advises: "Relax, breathe deep and come out in cotton dresses, soft shoes and yes – a straw hat.

"At each and every nook of the island steeped in history, there is something amusing awaiting you."

Fort Kochi is packed full of attractions while still retaining much of its old-world charm.

Those on luxury family holidays may also wish to check out the ancient Thakur House and David House, which was built by the Dutch East India Company during its occupation of the area.
