Luxury family holidays: Namibia is a great place to see big cats

One of the best destinations for a family safari adventure is Namibia, with the Kalahari Desert a great place to see big cats.

That is according to Emmy Award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Nick Stringer, who told the Guardian that while deserts can seem to be "seemingly featureless places", they are in fact rich expanses which can give visitors "extraordinary surprises".

While filming Walking with Meerkats for the National Geographic channel in 2001, Mr Stringer said he saw the Nossob River spring into life and the landscape was transformed as elephants and antelope began to arrive.

He stated that it was an "almost biblical" experience, which was made even more special when lions, cheetahs and other big cats began to arrive in search of prey.

While in the Kalahari, visitors may want to learn more about the history of the bushmen who live in parts of the desert, with bushman rock art to be enjoyed in the Damaraland region of Namibia.
