Tailor made holidays: Hanoi mixes the 'old and the new'
Families planning to book tailor made holidays in Vietnam will find that Hanoi is now home to a mix of modern and classic sites.
That is according to travel correspondent Ian Paynton, who recently embarked on a trip to the Vietnamese city and discovered it now features luxury hotels and classic monuments.
He wrote in the Independent: "Hanoi is one of South-east Asia's most authentically charming cities, built on centuries of rich tradition, colonisation and conflict.
"But Hanoi is also racing towards modernity. Signs of what's to come can be seen everywhere. This city may draw on its past but it is now being shaped by the future."
One particular area of interest for holidaymakers is the famous Old Quarter, according to Mr Paynton, where they can relax in its many bars, cafes and restaurants.
This year marked the 1,000th anniversary when former Emperor Ly Thai To moved the capital from Ninh Binh province to its current location 60 miles north.
