Christmas is 'ideal time' for tailor made holidays in Florence

Christmas is the ideal time to book tailor made holidays in Florence, according to a travel writer.

Aoife O'Riordain, writing for the Independent, expressed his belief that visitors will be captivated by the Tuscan capital during the festive period as it is home to a range of Christmas markets and "elaborately decorated shops".

He said: "In winter, the historic sites and museums of this Unesco World Heritage treasure are also significantly less crowded than at other times of the year – making it an ideal time for a cultural fix in the cradle of the Renaissance."

One particular site Mr O'Riordain urges holidaymakers to visit is the Uffizi Gallery, which is currently hosting an exhibition showcasing the work of famous Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.

Britons can also see "one of Italy's most magnificent churches", Basilica of Santa Croce, and indulge in some retail therapy at the range of boutiques located around Via de Tornabuoni, Via Roma and Via degli Strozzi.
